Background
A client is offering HPV primary screening, a new form of early detection for cervical cancer, which is not yet part of the clinical guidelines. The aim was to clarify how the costs compare with those of the existing screening programme.
Our Approach
-
1
Definition of the relevant screening algorithms and their cost components.
-
2
Top-down quantification of costs per cycle and over the course of a patient’s lifetime (reimbursement amounts, frequency of findings).
-
3
Extrapolation of the cost benefit to the population and quantification of the potential savings for the statutory health insurance scheme.
Result
The analysis revealed a clear cost advantage: primary HPV screening costs around 55.71 euros per cycle, compared with 60.55 euros for the current co-testing approach – a saving of around 787 euros over the course of a patient’s lifetime. Extrapolated to the female population, continuing with the current algorithm results in avoidable additional costs of up to 33 billion euros. The client was thus able to demonstrate the economic added value of its diagnostic test, even though it is not yet part of the clinical guideline.
