Background
The Bavarian automotive and supplier industry is facing far-reaching structural change as a result of electromobility and new technologies. This has raised questions for policymakers and businesses as to how well the sector is prepared for this and which regions and business areas will be particularly affected.
Our Approach

Compilation of a detailed dataset on companies, locations, employment and product portfolios.

Analysis of market shares in growth sectors and the impact on individual regions, down to district level.

Identification of areas of opportunity and risk, and recommendations for action for the political and business sectors.
Result
Using a dataset covering around 450,000 employees in the sector, a picture emerged down to the level of the 71 districts, 25 independent cities and 18 planning regions: Around 10 % of the companies operate in business sectors threatened by change. Sectors offering opportunities account for slightly more than those under threat, with around 196,000 employees (44 %) compared to around 179,000 (40 %) in the threatened sectors. This made it possible to take a targeted regional approach to support the sector’s transformation.
