Background

Prior to the launch of a medicinal product for atopic dermatitis, it was unclear to what extent its market launch would place a strain on the budgets of the funding bodies over several years.

Our Approach

  • 1

Derivation of the target population and cost components from statutory health insurance claims data, prevalence data and efficacy data.

  • 2

    Development of a population-based budget-impact model covering a multi-year period.

  • 3

Quantification of budgetary impacts, broken down by segment, therapeutic area and cost category.

Result

This provided a transparent, multi-year picture of the financial implications from the payer’s perspective: Assuming a market penetration of 25 % by 2030 in a target population of around 330,600 patients, where the product replaces or delays systemic therapies, this would result, over five years, in savings for the statutory health insurance system in the mid-single-digit billion range and savings in the five-figure range per patient – a robust basis for reimbursement and market access discussions.
