We used a population-based Markov model to calculate the cost-effectiveness of an innovative product compared with standard therapy.

Background
For an innovative, patent-protected product, it was necessary to demonstrate the additional clinical benefit in relation to the extra costs compared with standard therapy – as a basis for price negotiations and HTA dossiers.
Our Approach
-
1
Development of a population-based Markov model to simulate disease progression.
-
2
Calculation of incremental costs, QALY gains and the ICER compared with standard treatment.
-
3
Validation via sensitivity analyses using standard willingness-to-pay thresholds.
Result
The analysis provided the ICER and the cost per QALY gained; sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these metrics and demonstrated the product’s cost-effectiveness below common willingness-to-pay thresholds – a solid basis for price negotiations and HTA dossiers.
