Joint study with Roland Berger: Forecast of turnover, value creation and job potential in Baden-Württemberg

Hydrogen and fuel cells will play a central role in the future when it comes to reducing global CO2 emissions. The great advantage of hydrogen is that it offers a way to store regeneratively generated electricity in the long term. In addition, it can provide emission-free energy in a wide range of applications: from the mobility and transport sectors to industrial use and heat and power generation for buildings.

In order to demonstrate the potential of the hydrogen and fuel cell industry for Baden-Württemberg as a business location, the IPE has prepared a study in cooperation with Roland Berger on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment.

Methodological approach

As part of the study, IPE carried out a quantitative analysis of the economic potential of establishing a hydrogen and fuel cell industry in Baden-Württemberg. The result was a forecast of future gross value added and potential job effects subdivided by sector up to the year 2030.

The assumptions of the 2019 market study published by the FCH JU are largely used to forecast the revenue potential in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector. In the ambitious scenario, investments and sales potential are broken down by different sectors (transport, industrial raw materials, etc.). This allows a forecast for the revenue potential for companies operating in Germany and Baden-Württemberg. In the ambitious scenario, the FCH JU forecasts a turnover potential on the entire European market (including imports) of EUR 85 billion. This is assigned to different value creation levels as well as sectors.

The most important facts in a nutshell:

  • Achieving the climate targets of the EU, Germany and the state of Baden-Württemberg requires a far-reaching restructuring of our energy systems and a complete switch to emission-free technologies in all energy consumption sectors.

  • Hydrogen and fuel cells will play a central role in the future and become one of the key technologies of the 21st century.

  • If the location succeeds in retaining a share of the developing global hydrogen and fuel cell market in the future that corresponds to its current economic performance, the industry in Baden-Württemberg could generate a turnover of up to 9 billion euros in 2030, a gross value added of up to 2.3 billion euros, and approximately 16,500 associated jobs, primarily in the mobility sector.

  • In order to exploit future value creation potentials of the hydrogen and fuel cell industry and to remain competitive in the international arena, it will be crucial in the next two to five years to further develop and expand existing competencies through investments.

  • It is crucial to ensure the creation of political and regulatory framework conditions at European and federal level in Germany that sustainably support the further expansion of the use of the technology. In addition, the state government, companies, research institutions as well as cities, municipalities and other stakeholders in the state of Baden-Württemberg should actively advocate for the further development of the technology and take action themselves.
